Mechanism of Action
HCG binds the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR) on Leydig cells in the testes and theca/granulosa cells in the ovaries, mimicking luteinising hormone to stimulate steroidogenesis — testosterone production in males, progesterone and oestrogen support in females.

Because HCG acts directly at the gonadal receptor rather than upstream at the pituitary, it is used in research settings to study gonadal responsiveness independently of hypothalamic-pituitary signalling, and to investigate maintenance of testicular function during suppression of endogenous LH.
