SS-31
Metabolic — Mitochondria-Targeted Peptide SS-31 (also studied as elamipretide)
A small, cell-permeable tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
By binding cardiolipin, it stabilises mitochondrial cristae structure and reduces excess reactive oxygen species production, making it a widely studied tool compound in mitochondrial dysfunction research.
- Target: Cardiolipin (inner mitochondrial membrane)
- Class: Mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide
- Primary Research Focus: Mitochondrial function & oxidative stress
SS-31
Mechanism of Action
SS-31 concentrates up to 1,000-fold in the inner mitochondrial membrane due to its alternating aromatic-cationic structure. It binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilising cristae architecture and electron transport chain organisation.
Reduced Oxidative Stress
By preventing cardiolipin peroxidation and stabilising the electron transport chain, SS-31 research shows reduced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and improved ATP synthesis efficiency in models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury and age-related mitochondrial decline.
Broad Research Interest
Because mitochondrial dysfunction underlies research models of cardiac injury, kidney injury, neurodegeneration, and age-related muscle decline, SS-31 (studied clinically as elamipretide) has been investigated across a wide range of preclinical and early clinical contexts.
